Kate Coffey, Wife of James Coffey, Manager of “The Coffey House”

Kate Coffey has been married to James for five years. She is extremely supportive of her husband’s entrepreneurial qualities and supports his risky new venture, opening a restaurant in the middle of an economic downturn. Kate has been able to assist and work alongside her husband in creating the new business as she has an enviable background in business and management. She graduated from the University of Ireland Maynooth with an Honours Degree in Business and Management and has gained work experience in high profile businesses such as Bank of America, KPMG, Aviva and Enterprise Ireland. The experience she gained in these industries has been priceless and have become the reason she is a motivated and driven business woman today.

After Christmas of this year, Kate left a steady job as retail manager for Tesco Ireland, based in Dublin. She was excited about her husband’s new venture and wished to help him succeed. This seemed like an extremely foolish idea to everyone around her and while she admits that it was “risky” she felt running a business that her husband created would be an exciting and different adventure. She explained that she liked the idea of having a more diverse role in a business setting. Kate is now the business manager of “The Coffee House” and is currently helping her husband with the final stages of setting up the restaurant as well as recruiting staff members and organising successful advertising of the up and coming business. Kate is looking forward to this new business venture, and has bright ideas for the future of “The Coffee House”.

Is mass emigration really such a bad thing?

It is no secret that there is an enormous up rise in the levels of Irish citizens leaving these shores for pastures new in countries such as Australia, Canada England and Eastern Europe. These numbers have soared in recent times due to the worsening jobs crisis and gloomy economic downturn. Students who have studied a minimum of three years in college and obtained their degree, masters or PhD are struggling to obtain careers in their field of study due to the lack of opportunities in this country which is unsurprisingly frustrating for those in question. For some the only option is emigration.

Whilst there are many who are saddened to be leaving behind their families, friends and life, for the majority it is an exciting time in their lives. I feel this is a great opportunity for graduated students and a chance to expand and improve their knowledge skills and confidence. In my opinion young people are supposed to up-roots and experience what life has to offer. And there is no better time than the present, when there is an excuse and a reason to leave.

By the time these emigrants have experienced all that these diverse cultures and countries have to offer and feel it is time to return to their homelands, the Irish economy will expectantly and hopefully be returning to a healthy economic state. The number of jobs careers and opportunities available in this country will hopefully have soared to a record level and there will be a reason for the Irish to stay in this country

For now, it is a brilliant opportunity for young people with little obligation to spread their wings and see what the world has to offer.

British vs. Irish: The Debate

Rory McIlroy is a Northern Irish professional golfer from County Down. McIlroys skill and success has gone from strength to strength in the past couple of years. Following last weekend’s Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, McIlroy continued good form and won the competition, and with it claimed the No. 1 spot in the world rankings. Whilst this victory was a spectacular achievement and the Irish and British celebrated this win, it also sparked a fiery debate amongst tweeters and face bookers: Is Rory McIlroy considered Irish or British?

Piers Morgan seemed to be central to this seemingly controversial issue initially sparking the debate on twitter by announcing:

“Superb @McIlroyRory: World No1. Doesn’t – quite literally – get any better than that. #BritPower”

This led to a backlash from the Irish fans stating that he may hold a British passport but he is of Irish nationality. The majority of the Irish involved believe Britain is an island; Northern Ireland is politically part of the United Kingdom, not Britain.

Rory McIlory has referred to his nationality in an interview with Piers Morgan in 2011:

“I hold a British passport however I consider myself to be Northern Irish”

The main reasons behind this angered out lash has to do with the 2016 Olympic Games for which McIlroy have qualified for. He must choose whether he is representing Ireland or Britain in this major event. Whatever decision he comes to will be heavily criticised by the one or other party although it is clear that McIlroy’s decision will be based on what is best on what is best for his career. It will not be a political decision.

At the end of the day Irish people are going to refer to him as being Irish and British people are going to refer to him as being British. I think this will always be the case, in the foreseen future anyway, whether it be a number one golfer, band, movie star or otherwise! This debate goes beyond the questioning of a professional golfers nationality, it is a long running rivalled controversy between Ireland and Britain.
